The Buckeyes have landed commitment No. 6 for their 2022 recruiting class as tight end Bennett Christian from Acworth (Ga.) Allatoona has announced he is headed to Ohio State. Christian, who the Buckeyes offered a scholarship on June 2, picked Ohio State over his other finalist, Tennessee.
“I’m a Buckeye now,” Christian told Bucknuts. “It’s just where I wanted to go. Man, my relationship with the coaches is so tight. It’s a good place, and a good environment to be in. It’s a place you can win a national championship. I felt like I was a priority for them.”
Even though the NCAA dead period was in effect, Christian was in Columbus for his first Ohio State visit on Aug. 15. He made the trip with his father. It went great and afterwards Christian told Bucknuts he “loved it” at Ohio State. He also told Bucknuts he would visit Tennessee on August 22 and then announce his college choice, either the Buckeyes or Vols, on his birthday Sept. 1. Christian made the Tennessee visit and announced this evening exactly as he said he would.
“I knew where I wanted to go,” Christian said. “So I got on the phone with coach (Ryan) Day. He was so happy. He said I was one of their favorite targets. Then after I got off with coach Day I was on a conference call with coach Day and coach (Kevin) Wilson.”
The 6-foot-6 and 235-pound Christian has a list of at least a dozen offers that also includes Penn State, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Nebraska, Kentucky, Pitt and Kansas in addition to Ohio State and Tennessee.
Christian’s father played for Johnny Majors at Tennessee in the late 70’s and his uncle was a defensive lineman for Penn State in the mid 70’s.
Some Buckeye fans have questioned whether the Buckeyes throw to the tight end enough. But Christian looks at it differently.
“Some people say Ohio State doesn’t use the tight end like they should,” Christian said. “But Ohio State has the best wide receivers, the best running backs, and they shouldn’t single out one position. They use them all. And coach Wilson is the best coach to develop tight ends.”
Christian pretty much was sure of where he would be going back in August when he visited Ohio State.
“I had been leaning to Ohio State,” Christian said. “Then my visit confirmed it.”
Christian is a 3-star prospect in the 247Sports rankings. He is the country’s 18 tight end and the No. 26 prospect in Georgia.
