Collin Martin, Landon Donovan and San Diego’s solidarity after a homophobic slur – The Athletic

Viewers watching Wednesday night’s USL match between San Diego Loyal and Phoenix Rising likely ended the first half in a state of confusion. Deep into first half stoppage time, referee Joseph Salinas whistled the play dead, approached Loyal midfielder Collin Martin and brandished a red card. The reason for the expulsion remained mysterious. But that was just the beginning. 

As ESPN cameras broadcast from the sideline between the benches, Salinas called a conference between his officiating crew, Loyal coach Landon Donovan, and Rising coach Rick Schantz. The cameras captured Loyal defender Tarek Morad approaching Schantz directly: “Coach, your player called my gay teammate a b— boy,” Morad said, “You’re not dumb, you know what that means.” (The term is a Jamaican slang slur for a gay or effeminate man.)
