Kirk Herbstreit addresses his emotional GameDay response to racial injustice – The Athletic

Kirk Herbstreit barely slept prior to the start of “College GameDay” on Saturday. The ESPN college football analyst said he was up between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. CT, wrestling with what he was going to say on the subject of college football players discussing the racial injustices they have faced during their lives.

Herbstreit had known for three days that one of the segments on the preview episode of “College GameDay” would feature a roundtable discussion hosted by ESPN’s Maria Taylor with college football players across the country discussing systemic racism and their attempts to make a change as player power grows in college football. The conversation ran nine minutes — which is a very long segment for any pregame show — and it was powerful and honest.
